Willamette Users who are setting up Netscape without the assistance of WITS should create a user profile first, then check all of the settings listed in Configuring Netscape 7 Mail, if you want to use Netscape for email. For additional information, choose Help from the menu. If you have another Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as AOL, MSN, or Earthlink, you may also need to refer to Willamette Email Settings for Other Internet Service Providers.

These instructions are for Netscape 7 for Windows. Netscape Communicator uses a different set of steps for creating a profile. If you need help with an earlier version of Netscape, see our documentation for Netscape Communicator 4.7 Profile Manager.

Your profile may have been setup (or partially setup) when Netscape was installed. If you have an earlier version of Netscape installed, Netscape 7 will have a list of your profiles from the previous version. Your old profiles can be automatically converted for version 7, so if you already have a working profile, simply select it and your old information will be retrieved. Netscape 7 will then create a new set of files with this information without altering your old files, so that your profile will still work under the older version of Netscape.

If you're not sure or just want to start over, delete the existing profile(s) with the Profile Manager. You can also use the Profile Manager to create different profiles that will allow multiple users of the same computer to have a customized profile for email, bookmarks, and all Netscape preferences settings. When configured with multiple user profiles, Netscape prompts you to select a Profile Name when you start.

• Start the Profile Manager (Start > Programs > Netscape 7 > User Profile Manager).
• To delete an existing profile, select it, then click on the Delete button.
• Click on the New button in the Profile Manager dialog box to create a new profile.
• The Create Profile assistant will start.
• The first screen is some basic information. Click Next to continue.
• Enter a name for your profile.
  Unlike earlier versions of Netscape, the profile manager for Netscape 7 does not deal with mail or newsgroup server configuration. If you convert a profile from an earlier version, the server information will be preserved, but a new profile created under version 7 will only have a profile name, a folder location, and a language option.
• Click Finish when you get to the last screen.

When you use a new profile for the first time, you may be asked to join the "Netscape Network". Most Willamette users will not need a Netscape Network account. To skip these steps:

• Click the Cancel button
• Click Yes.
• Netscape will start.
