Willamette Users who are setting up Netscape Communicator without the assistance of WITS should create a user profile first, then check all of the settings listed in Configuring Netscape Messenger, if you want to use Netscape for e-mail. For additional information, choose Help from the menu. If you have another Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as AOL, MSN, or Earthlink, you may also need to refer to Willamette E-mail Settings for Other Internet Service Providers.
Different versions of Netscape may use slightly different terminology for commands and settings in the dialog boxes. These instructions are for Netscape Communicator 4.8 for Windows.
Your profile may have been setup (or partially setup) when Netscape Communicator was installed. If you're not sure or just want to start over, delete the existing profile(s) with the Profile Manager. You can also use the Profile Manager to create different profiles that will allow multiple users of the same computer to have a customized profile for e-mail, bookmarks, and all Netscape Communicator preferences settings. When configured with multiple user profiles, Netscape Communicator prompts you to select a Profile Name when you start.
The first screen is some basic information; click Next to continue. As you complete each screen, click the Next button to move ahead or the Back button to go back. When you get to the last screen, the Next button will be dim; the last step is to click Finish (if you click Finish before you get to the last screen, your User Profile will be missing some settings).

If you have previously used Eudora or Outlook Express, you may be able to import your current messages and address book. Some versions of the User Profile utility will prompt you to import existing files at the end of the User Profile setup. You can also do this after you have completed the setup by choosing Communicator > Tools > Import Utility from the menu.
