Introduction

This document contains instructions for connecting a Macintosh computer running Mac OS X to the internet using Willamette's dial-up service. You will need:

This document assumes that you already have the appropriate hardware and software installed, that your Macintosh has an internal modem that is correctly configured, and that you are familiar with Mac OS X. If you need assistance, please call the WITS Help Desk at 503-370-6767.

Configuring Mac OS X

  1. Open the Network control panel: Click on the System Preferences item on the Dock, then click on Network in the Internet & Network section.
  2. At the top of the Network control panel, choose Location: Automatic and Show: Internal Modem.
  3. Click on the TCP/IP tab.
  4. Choose Configure: Using PPP.
    Domain Name Servers and Search Domains are set automatically.
  5. Click on the PPP tab.
  6. Enter the following information:

    Service Provider: Willamette University
    Telephone Number: 503-370-6627
    Alternate Number: 503-370-6628
    Account Name: your network logon name
    Password: Leave blank (we recommend you enter your password each time you logon)
    Do not check the Save password box.

  7. Click on PPP Options.
  8. Make the following changes under Session Options:
  9. Click the Apply Now button at the bottom of the Network control panel.
  10. Close System Preferences.

Starting your Internet Software

Congratulations ... your computer is now set up to use the Internet!

Checking your Willamette E-Mail

There are two ways to access your Willamette e-mail in OS X. You can access Willamette Webmail using your web browser:

  1. Open your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, etc.)
  2. In the address bar, type: http://webmail.willamette.edu/
  3. At the login screen, enter your Willamette username and password

OS X also includes a simple mail program called Mail. Using this program requires some configuration:

  1. Open the Internet control panel: Click on the System Preferences item on the Dock, then click on Internet in the Internet & Network section.
  2. Click on the Email tab.
  3. Enter the following information:

Default Email Reader: Mail.
Email Address: username@willamette.edu
Incoming Mail Server: mail.willamette.edu.
Account Type: IMAP
User Account ID: your network logon name
Password: Leave blank (we recommend you enter your password each time you access your e-mail).
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.willamette.edu
 *If you're off campus, using an ISP such at AOL, Earthlink, AT&T, Qwest, etc., then you must use the outgoing mail server provided by your ISP. Contact the ISPs customer service to get the server name.

  1. Close System Preferences.
  2. Start Mail (click on the Mail icon on the Dock).
  3. Enter your password.
  4. From the Finder menu, choose Mail > Preferences.
  5. Click on the Account icon (if necessary).
  6. Select your account (under Description), then click on Edit.
  7. Click on the Account Options tab.
  8. Enter the following information:

    Account Path Prefix: mail

  9. Close Mail Preferences.
  10. You may have to quit and restart Mail for the changes to take effect.
