Introduction
This document
contains instructions for connecting a Windows XP computer to the internet using
Willamette's dial-up service. You will need:
- A computer
running Windows XP
- A modem (56
Kbps is preferred) and an available phone line
- Network software
such as a web browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) and an email client
(Netscape, Pine, Outlook Express, etc)
- Your original
system software (Windows XP CD-ROM or System Restore disc)
This document
assumes that you already have the appropriate hardware and software installed,
and that you are familiar with Windows XP. If you need assistance, please call
the WITS Help Desk at 503-370-6767.
Configuring Windows XP
- Log on to your
computer as a user with administrative privileges.
- Click the Start
button.
- Click on the
Control Panel item in the Start Menu.
(If you
don't see the Control Panel, try looking for the Settings menu,
then click Control Panel from there.
|
|

|
|
Start
> Control Panel
|
|
Start
> Settings > Control Panel
|
- Double-click
the Network Connections control panel.

- Click on the
New Connection Wizard. If you don't see a New Connection Wizard, look
to the blue area on the left of your screen for Create a new connection
in the Network tasks list.
(If you don't see "Create a new connection" or "New Connection
Wizard" then you may be logged in as a user with limited privileges.)
 |

or - |
 |
- You should
now be at the Welcome to the Network Connection Wizard screen. Click
Next.
- Under the Network
Connection Type screen, select Connect to the Internet, then Click
Next.
- Under the Getting
Ready screen, select Setup my connection manually, then click Next.
- Under the Internet
Connection screen, select Connect using a dial-up modem, then click
Next.
- Under the Connection
Name screen, type the name of your ISP: Willamette University,
then click Next.
- Under the Phone
Number to Dial screen, type one of the following numbers (including the
area code):
- 503-370-6627
- 503-370-6628
- Both phone
numbers provide the fastest dial-up service available from Willamette.
- If necessary
you can include other digits (for outside line access or long distance),
but under normal circumstances, you should only try to call Willamette's
modems locally.
- When you
have finished typing in a phone number, click Next.
- 12.) Under
the Internet Account Information screen, fill in your Willamette username.
(This is the same username you would use for Willamette email. For example,
if your email address is jstudent@willamette.edu,
then your username is jstudent.)
 |
- If you
wish, fill in your password and confirm it by typing it a second time
in the space provided. If you do not provide a password here, then you
will need to fill it in at the time you make a connection, which is
less convenient but more secure.
- Uncheck
"Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the
Internet from this computer" (since only you should be using your
Willamette login name and password).
If
you wish, uncheck "Make this the default Internet connection."
- Uncheck
"Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this computer" (since
there is a firewall for the Willamette University network to which you
will be connecting).
- Click
Next.
|
- 13.) In the
Completing the New Connection Wizard screen, check "Add a shortcut to
this connection to my desktop," and then click Finish.
- 14.) The Network
Connection Wizard will close, and a new window labeled Connect Willamette
University will open. Fill in your password if you didn't do so earlier
(in step 12).
If you wish, for greater security, uncheck "Save the user name and password
for the following users:" In any case, be sure that the name and password
is saved for no one but "Me."
- 15.) Click
Dial.
Connecting to Willamette's
Dial-up Server
- Make sure your
modem is turned on and connected to a phone line.
- Double-click
the Willamette University icon on your desktop (the one created at
step 12 above).
- Type your email
password at the appropriate place in the window that opens, if you have not
arranged for your password to be saved.
- Click Dial
(the modem will begin dialing).
- Once you are
connected, you can minimize the connection window and start any Internet applications.
Also, you will see a new icon in the System Tray (the lower-right corner of
your screen, near the clock) indicating that your dialup connection is established.
NOTE: If
your Internet software (Telnet, Netscape, etc.) is properly installed, your
computer will make the appropriate network connections when you start the Internet
software. You will be prompted to login, if necessary.
Disconnecting
Close all Internet
applications, then do one of the following:
- Maximize your
connection window (if you minimized it), then click Disconnect this
connection under Network tasks.
- Double-click
the Willamette University icon on your desktop, then click Disconnect.
- Click the connection
icon in the System Tray (see item #5 directly above), then click Disconnect.
Email Client Settings
The easiest way
to check your Willamette email from off campus is to use Webmail. Open your
web browser and go to: http://webmail.willamette.edu/
If you are going
to be using an email client other than Webmail or Pine (such as Netscape Messenger
or Outlook Express) you will need the following settings:
- IMAP server
(incoming mail): mail.willamette.edu
- SMTP server
(outgoing mail): smtp.willamette.edu
- Note: If
you later decide to switch from Willamette's dial-up to an Internet Service
Provider (ISP) such as AOL, Comcast, QwestDSL, Earthlink, etc, then, you
must use the SMTP server provided by your new ISP. Such information can
usually be found on the ISP's website, or in the documentation they provide
when you set up your connection with them.
- News Server
(News Groups): news.willamette.edu
- Directory Server:
ldap.willamette.edu
search base: o=willamette.edu
