Network
Home Directory - Mac OS X
Printable Version
Mapping
your network drive to the desktop
- NOTE:
Mac OS 10.3, 10.4. and 10.5 all display
slightly different screens. The screen shots
are from OS 10.3. However, the essential
details and terminology shown below are
correct.
- IMPORTANT:
In OS 10.5 only, set the Finder preferences
as follows to make sure your Home Directory
icon remains on your Desktop:
On the Finder menu, choose Preferences.
Click on the General button.
Check the Connected servers box.
- Select
Connect to Server from the Go
menu.
- In
the Connect to Server window, in the Address
box, enter:
smb://home/homes
Note: If you have been granted access to
other network drives (also known as network
shares), you can map them using this method.
For example, a network share called "ourstuff"
would be smb://home/ourstuff/
-
-
In
the next window that appears, enter your Username and Password.
If your screen shows the Workgroup/Domain box,
leave it blank. The latest version
of OS X allows Guest connections. Be sure
to connect as Registered user (shown
as a radio button above Username).
- Click
OK (on later versions of OS X, click Connect).
Once
connected, you'll see an icon on your desktop (different
operating systems will show a different icon, but all will
display the name of the network share). Double-click
this icon to access the files on your home directory.
