ORiNOCO Wireless Card Install/Setup Instructions

Overview

This document covers installing the ORiNOCO wireless network card, and configuring it to connect to Willamette University's wireless network (BlitzNet). These instructions are for a PC laptop, running the Windows operating system (95/98/ME/2000). The steps in this process are:

  1. Installing the Client Manager Software
  2. Windows Driver Install & Wireless Network Setup
  3. Register on Willamette's wireless Network

Support for Wireless Network Connections

In addition to this document, you should view the documents that describe Connecting your Computer to the 'BlitzNet' Wireless Network for Windows 95/98/ME and Windows 2000. WITS support for wireless network connections is limited to these documents, and basic troubleshooting via the WITS Help Desk. If you choose to purchase a wireless card other than ORiNOCO, then you should follow the instructions for installation and setup that come with the card.

Installing the Client Manager Software

1. Insert the ORiNOCO software CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Windows will automatically start the CD and display the picture below.

Note: If Windows does not start the CD automatically:
  • Open My Computer.
  • Double-click on your CD-ROM drive.
  • Double-click on Setup.

 

2. Select Install Software from the Main Menu.

3. Select Client Manager from the Install Software Menu.

4. Click Next to continue.

5. Read the Liscense Agreement and click Yes.

6. At Choose Destination Location, click Next.

7. At Select Program Folder, click Next.

8. At Select the Client Manager you want to install, make sure Client Manager English is checked, then click Next.

The Client Manager software is now being installed on your computer.

9. At InstallShield Wizard Complete, uncheck I'd like to start the Client Manager, and click Finish.

Windows Driver Install & Wireless Network Setup

Note: Windows 2000 users, please continue. All other versions of Windows, please skip to the Windows 95/98/ME section of this document.

 

Windows 2000

1. Open the ORiNOCO software CD-ROM, and select Install Software from the Main Menu.

2. From the Install Software Menu, click Windows 2000 Driver.

3. Click Next to install WLLUC48.

4. At Choose Destination Location, click Next.

The WLLUC48 driver is now being installed on your computer.

5. Insert the ORiNOCO wireless card into your PCMCIA slot.

The Found New Hardware Wizard should auto-detect your wireless card.

6. Click Next to continue.

7. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device and click Next.

8. Select Specify a location and click Next.

9. In the Copy manufacturer's files from: window, type:
c:\Program Files\ORiNOCO\Driver.

10. Click OK.

The driver installation is now complete. Continue with the remaining steps to configure your wireless card for Willamette's wireless network.

11. From your Start Menu, choose Programs, then ORiNOCO, then Wireless Network Settings.

12. Under Select Profile, type Willamette. Choose Access Point from the pull-down menu, then click Edit Profile.

13. For Network Name, type BlitzNet. Click OK.

14. Click OK again. Your wireless card setup is now complete.

15. The final step is to register your computer with Willamette's network. Launch your web browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) to begin registration.

 

Windows 95/98/ME

1. Insert the ORiNOCO Wireless card into your PCMCIA slot.

The Found New Hardware Wizard should auto-detect your wireless card.

2. Click Next to continue.

3. Choose Search for a suitable driver for my device, then click Next.

4. Under Locate Driver Files, select CD-ROM drive, then click Next.

Note: Windows Me will not automatically locate the correct driver. Instead of searching the entire CD-ROM, browse to \DRIVERS\Win_Me, then click Next.

5. After Windows had found the driver for your card click Next.

Your driver installation is now complete. Continue with the remain steps to configure your wireless card for Willamette's network.

6. Go to the Start Menu, choose Programs, then ORiNOCO, then Wireless Network Settings.
7. In the Add/Edit Configuration Profile window, click Add.

8. Under Profile Name type Willamette. Under Network Type, choose Access Point. Click Next.

9. In the Add/Edit Configuration Profile window, select Willamette, and click Edit.

10. For Network Name, type BlitzNet. Click Next.

11. Under Set Security, uncheck Enable Data Security. Click Next.

12. Under Power Management, select Off. Click Next.

13. Under TCP/IP Behavior, uncheck Renew IP Address. Click Finish.

Note: If you will be connecting to a wireless network other than Willamette's then you would want to put a check in this box.

Your wireless card setup is now complete. The final step in getting connected is to register with Willamette's network. Open your web browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) to start the wireless registration process.
