Using a Telephone from a Residence Hall Room

The following information applies to all students living in residence halls, except the Haseldorf Apartments.



Placing On-Campus Calls - Free

  • Dial the 4-digit extension you wish to call.
Placing Local Calls - Free
  • Dial 9 
    • There is no change in dial tone.
  • Dial the 10-digit local telephone number. (Always include the 503 area code.)
Placing Long Distance Calls
  • In order to make long distance calls from the telephone in your residence hall room you must use a pre-paid calling card or credit card. There is no university supplied long distance calling from residence hall rooms.

    Without a pre-paid calling card or credit card, you may make long distance calls from pay telephones on campus.

Placing Long Distance Calls with a Pre-Paid Calling Card.
  • Dial 9 
    • You will hear a dial tone.
  • Dial the 1-800 toll free number for your calling card
  • Enter your PIN Number
  • Dial the area code and seven digit telephone number
Placing Long Distance Calls with a Credit Card (Post-paid Cards)
  • Dial 9 
    • You will hear a dial tone.
  • MCI/WorldCom:
    • Dial 10102220
    • Dial the area code and seven digit telephone number
      • You will then either hear a tone, or an operator will come on the line and ask for your billing.
    • Dial your PIN Number
  • All other long distance companies:
    • Dial 1-800 plus the toll free number for your long distance provider (e.g. 1-800-225-5288 for AT&T)
    • Dial the area code and seven digit telephone number
      • You will then either hear a tone, or an operator will come on the line and ask for your billing.
    • Dial your PIN Number
Placing Collect Calls
  • Dial 9 
    • You will hear a dial tone
  • Dial 1010222 
    • This code uses the MCI/Worldcom company.
  • Dial 0, area code, and seven digit telephone number 
    • The operator will come on the line to ask for the appropriate information.
Placing Toll Free Calls
  • Dial 9 
    • You will continue to hear the same dial tone.
  • Dial 1-800, 1-888,  or 1-877 and the toll free number
Calling Directory Assistance

Charges vary according to the area code called.

  • Dial 9
  • You will hear a the dial tone.
  • Dial 1, area code, then 555-1212
  • 411 will not be activated unless it is required.
Placing Calls to Individuals with Hearing Impairments
  • Dial 9711
    • You will be connected to a Communications Assistant who will relay the call to the number you specify.

Placing International Calls

  • You must use an International Calling card to make International Calls
  • Dial 9 
    • You will hear the dial tone
  • Dial the 1-800 toll free number for your card
  • Enter your PIN number
  • Dial the country code, the city routing code, then the number you seek. 
    • the country code is a two or three digit number and the city routing code is a one to five digit number.

Abuse of Rights If you abuse the privilege of having long distance access by accepting collect calls without notifying the Business Office you will be subject to the following fines:

1st offense: $25 fine.
2nd offense: $50 fine & the loss of your long distance calling privileges for the remainder of your time at the University.

Also remember, any damage to the phone, cord, or outlet will be billed to you.
