Anti-Virus
Software
The
best way to cure and prevent virus infection is to install anti-virus
software. Once configured properly, anti-virus software can:
-
Regularly
scan your hard drive for possible virus infection
-
Scan
email messages and attachments for viruses
-
Remove
viruses and repair damaged files
-
Quarantine
infected files in a protected area of your hard drive until
they can be repaired or deleted
Willamette
University policy requires that all computers
on the campus network have up-to-date anti-virus
software. This means not only that you have anti-virus
software installed and running on your computer,
but also that information about new viruses is
downloaded to your computer on a daily or weekly
basis.
WITS
now provides Symantec Anti-Virus software free
to current students who connect their computers
to ResNet and BlitzNet. You will have the opportunity
to download and install the software as part of
the network registration process. It is configured
to check each file you use, scan your disk each
week, and check Symantec's server for updated
virus information each day.
You
can also download the WITS copy of Symantec Anti-Virus
by going to the following website: https://secure.willamette.edu/services/software/
***
NOTE!: If more than one anti-virus
program is installed on your computer, it will
cause problems. Before you install the Symantec
Anti-Virus software provided by Willamette University,
you must first uninstall any anti-virus
software you have currently on your machine. Follow
the proper uninstall/removal procedure for your
anti-virus software. Usually you run the uninstall
program that is located in the same folder as
the anti-virus software itself, or use the Add/Remove
Programs option found in your Windows Control
Panel. You may then download the software from
the link above and run the install program. If
you are unsure of how to accomplish this, or have
any questions please contact the WITS Help Desk
(503-370-6767) for more information.
***Also
NOTE: This software is only available
for current registered students who have already
connected their computers to ResNet (Residential
Network) or BlitzNet (Wireless Network). If you
have not yet registered your computer on Willamette's
network, you should do that first - you will be
given an opportunity to download the anti-virus
software then. This software is NOT available
for staff, faculty, or other university employees.
WITS
also installs Symantec Anti-Virus on all university
owned computers to ensure that all staff and faculty
are protected from virus infection. If you are
a Willamette employee, and you do not have anti-virus
software on your office computer, please submit
a WITS
Service Request, and we will send a technician
to install the software at no cost to your department.
Once installed, the software updates automatically.
If
you are a Willamette student using a personally
owned computer that is not connected to the campus
network, then it is your responsibility to purchase,
install, and update your own anti-virus software.
If you are a Willamette employee using a personally
owned computer, you must purchase your own anti-virus
software whether you use your computer on the campus
network or not.
Both
Norton
AntiVirus and McAfee
VirusScan can be purchased at most large computer,
electronics, or office supply retailers. They
can also be purchased or downloaded from the manufacturers
themselves:
