Microsoft
Windows
-
Windows Basics
An overview of Microsoft Windows, including the
desktop, starting programs, getting help, finding
and opening files, the Control Panel, "My Computer",
and the Windows "Explorer". This workshop will
also cover the basics of file management, although
a separate workshop is sometimes offered. You
will use Windows 2000 in the workshop, but the
features covered are similar in all versions of
Windows.
- Organizing
the "Stuff" on your Computer: File Management
for Windows
This workshop covers the directory structure
on a computer's hard drive, file management techniques,
and other tips for organizing your "electronic
filing cabinet", including transferring files
to your home directory on the network and making
backups.
- Customizing
Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office
There are many tricks you can use to personalize
Windows programs. For example, you can change
the wallpaper, change the way the My Computer
and Windows Explorer look, and add shortcuts to
the Desktop and the Taskbar. In Microsoft Office
(Word, Excel and PowerPoint), you can enable (or
disable) a number of "help you type"
features, add your own toolbars and buttons, set
default page features for new documents (for example,
margins and fonts). This workshop will cover some
setup tips, as well as some useful features that
are often overlooked.

overview of the Willamette network, including
managing your network home directory and the various
services available on our network and the internal
web site.
Email
- Mozilla Thunderbird (Email)
This workshop will cover the essentials
of using Thunderbird to read your Willamette email.
Thunderbird provides email in a Windows or Macintosh
interface and simplifies most of the problems
associated with sending and receiving attachments
and other non-text messages.
Special

the web, employing URLs (Uniform Resource Locators),
subject-oriented directories, and bookmarks.
- Searching
the Web
An exploration of some of the popular "search
engines" -- tools that help you search through
millions of web pages worldwide to find information.
This workshop focuses on enhancing your search
with advanced features common to most search engines,
as well as some discussion of how to evaluate
what you find on the 'net.
- Social
Software (Blogs, Wikis, etc.)
An exploration of "blogging". A blog,
or weblog, is a way to publish your writing online
without having to know how to create web pages.
If you can write, you can blog. The workshop will
cover the basics of blogging using one of the
popular blog tools.
- Nvu
Web Site Design Software
Nvu is a free application for creating web pages.
This workshop is for anyone who is interested
in a simple tool for working on your own, personal
web site.
Macromedia
Dreamweaver
- Site
Maintenance with Dreamweaver *
This workshop is especially for administrative
and classified staff who need to learn just enough
about Dreamweaver to do basic web site maintenance
on an existing site. The workshop will be one
session, covering updating site content, creating
links, creating new pages based on templates or
other existing pages, using prepared graphics,
and the essentials of site management.
- Site
Design with Dreamweaver *
An extended workshop, spread over 2-3 days
(2-hour sessions each day). This workshop is for
faculty and staff who need to produce original
content for the web. In addition to covering the
essentials of Dreamweaver in the first session,
this workshop wil include advanced Dreamweaver
topics such as layers, templates, library items,
and graphics. Prior experience with Dreamweaver
is recommended. Note: This workshop
is not intended for those who need to do
routine maintenance for an official department
web site (see Site Maintenance with Dreamweaver).
- Web
Forms Using a Datastore *
A web form that uses a "datastore"
stores the collected data in a file on the web
server. Each submission is appended to the next
row in an HTML table. You can view this file in
a browser window or download the file and and
open it as an Excel spreadsheet. Once you have
saved the file as a spreadsheet, the data can
be imported into a database program such as FileMaker
Pro or Microsoft Access. The data file can also
be password protected for viewing and editing.
Datastores are useful for surveys and other similar
applications.

Special Topics
Create
a Department Letterhead Template
To create a custom letterhead for your
department, you need to install the Copperplate
fonts, then create a Microsoft Word document
or template that allows you to add additional
information that will be printed in the header
and/or footer when you use the pre-printed
University letterhead paper. This workshop
will guide you through the process.
Self-service
Information for the Copperplate Font and Willamette
Letterhead Template
Styles
and Templates
A style is a set of formatting characteristics
that you can save and apply to other text
in your document.
A
template is a "boilerplate" document
that allows you to create a pre-formatted
starting point for similar documents you need
to recreate often.
Track
Changes and Comments
The Track Changes feature allows an author
(or a group of co-authors) to retain deleted
text to be accepted or rejected once the document
is finalized. With the feature activated,
Word "red lines" text deleted from
the original document so that is visible,
but distinct from the surrounding text. Comments
can be used to annotate your document and
to pass information to other authors or reviewers
Mail
Merge
Mail Merge is used to create form letters, mailing
labels, or envelopes that are linked to a database
of information, such as names and addresses.

RespondusBB
"A
powerful exam creation tool for Blackboard®
Respondus BB is a powerful software application
that enhances the functionality and usability
of Blackboard's quiz and survey tools. It also
provides seamless synchronization of print-based
and online exams. Whether you are a "power
user" of Blackboard® or a relatively
new user, Respondus can save you hours on each
assessment or survey project."
Turnitin
"Our
plagiarism prevention system makes it easy to
identify students who do plagiarize, but even
more importantly, also acts as a powerful deterrent
to stop plagiarism before it starts.
Used
either as a supplement to plagiarism prevention
or on its own, peer review creates new teaching
possibilities by allowing students to review and
learn from each other's work in an anonymous online
forum. Instructors using peer review create customized
"peer review assignments" comprised
of sets of topic questions and rubrics of their
choosing."
Blackboard
Willamette
has implemented Blackboard
as its course management system. Blackboard is
a comprehensive and flexible e-Learning software
platform. For more information about Blackboard,
contact Jo Meyertons,
Director of Instructional Design and Development.
Custom
Workshops & Consulting
WITS
can also provide software training and consultation
for faculty, staff, and administrative users. Workshops,
demonstrations, or consulting sessions can be arranged
to help an office or department with most of the
application software in use around campus. Some
sessions can be done "hands-on" in a classroom;
others may be limited to demonstration and explanation,
depending on the software involved. Contact Robert
Minato at extension 5394 (or email rminato)
for more information on custom workshops and
consulting services.
Software
& Hardware for Training
Workshops
are held in the WITS Training Center (Smullin 6)
as well as other locations on campus. All workshops
are for both Windows and Macintosh users (unless
indicated as specifically for one platform). Our
software may be a different version than what is
installed on your computer. We use recent versions
of the software, although not always the latest
version that has been released. You may notice some
differences, but most of the commands and techniques
presented in the workshops will be applicable to
all versions of the software.

Robert Minato at extension 5394 (or email
rminato)
