Willamette University Policy Governing the Use of General
Access Computer Labs
Access to the facilities:
- The labs are for the use of members of the Willamette community only (students,
faculty, staff, alumni and guests).
- Computers are available on a first-come first-served basis.
- If a station is left unattended for more than 20 minutes, another user may
have access to the machine.
- Academic work by students takes precedence over all other uses of the computers,
such as non-academic e-mail or web-surfing. Users engaged in non-academic
activity may be asked to give up the computer to another user with academic
work to carry out.
- Collins 407 may be reserved for seminars and workshops by contacting the
Registrar's office during the academic year or by contacting the Scheduling
office during the summer. Users that are not part of such a workshop may be
asked to leave the room.
Appropriate use of the facilities:
- Food and drink are not permitted in the lab.
- Software may not be copied to or from any computer without
special permission from WITS.
- The machines may not be reconfigured without permission.
- Files may not be saved to the computer's hard drive.
- Multiple copies may not be printed. A copy machine is
available for duplication.
- Files of other users are not to be altered without
permission.
- Use of the computer facilities should not hamper or interfere
with the ability of other students to do academic work. Activities
to be avoided include excessive computer volume, loud
conversation, and disruptive behavior.
Responsibilities:
Willamette University is not responsible for problems caused by
computer viruses, work left unattended on a computer, improper use of
the equipment, or loss of data due to equipment malfunctions or any
other reason.
WITS is not responsible for any items left in the computer lab.
This includes student IDs, books, personal items, and so on.
Use of the Willamette General Access Computer Labs is governed by
the Willamette University Student Code of Conduct, as well as all
policies outlined in WITS documents.
Willamette's sexual harassment policy covers all uses of
electronic technology and communication on campus, including e-mail
correspondence, newsgroups and viewing of Web pages. Refer to the
Sexual Harassment Policy for further information and a description of
your option in addressing sexual harassment. See the Selected
Policies Manual for a list of contact and resource people.
Enforcement:
Instances of improper use will be investigated according to the
appropriate WITS policies and the Code of Student Conduct.
Investigations that discover improper use may cause the WITS staff
to:
- limit the access of those found using facilities or services
improperly;
- install automatic measures to limit improper use;
- disclose information found during the investigation to other
University authorities;
- begin disciplinary actions as prescribed by University
policies and procedures.
