LLM Applicants
The Admission Committee determines admission to the LL.M. Program. The committee reviews each application individually, ensuring the fair appraisal of each applicant's file. Offers will be extended to eligible applicants on the basis of several factors, including law school record, proof of English proficiency if relevant, written recommendations, professional accomplishments and expected commitment to the LL.M. program.
How to Apply
Willamette's College of Law offers an LL.M. in Transnational Law and an LL.M. in Dispute Resolution. The LL.M. is an advanced law degree available to those who have completed the J.D. at an ABA-accredited American law school or its equivalent from a foreign law school.
LSDAS Electronic Application
Apply through the LSAC, which maintains an approved electronic-format application to Willamette's College of Law. See the LLM LSAC Web site for information about submitting electronic applications via CAS. Your application fee is waived when you apply online.
Postal Mail
Apply by submitting a paper application. There is a $50 application fee for paper applications. The application can be downloaded in PDF format (below).
When to Apply
The priority deadline is March 1 for fall admission and October 1 for spring admission. Please note, applications will continue to be accepted following the priority deadline so long as there is seat availability. Application Materials & Requirements
J.D.
All LL.M. applicants must have a J.D. from an accredited American law school or its equivalent from a foreign law school. Official law transcripts must be sent with degree conferred. If transcripts are not in English, a certified English translation must accompany the original. Please use the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) LL.M. Credential Assembly Service (CAS) for transcript translation and evaluation.
Application Processing Fee
There is no fee for any application submitted electronically.
Applicants submitting paper applications must submit a nonrefundable application processing fee of $50. Make checks payable to "Willamette University." Submit the application processing fee with the application for admission.
Official, Certified Academic Records
Please use the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) LL.M. Credential Assembly Service. An official certified copy of your law school transcript, along with an official certification of your law degree (documentation of your qualification to practice law in your home country-such as a bar association ID number), is required.
All transcripts or other academic records must be official documents bearing the registrar's signature or the institution's seal. If these records are not in English, a certified English translation must be submitted together with the originals. Please use the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) LL.M. Credential Assembly Service (llm.lsac.org).
Letters of Recommendation
Two letters of written recommendation must be in English, or accompanied by a certified English translation. They must be submitted with your LSAC CAS report.
Personal Statement
Applicants must submit a written statement discussing your qualification and intentions for pursuing a graduate degree from the College of Law. The statement must be in English.
Résumé
A resume is a required component of a completed application. Please attach one to your electronic application. The resume is not a substitute for the personal statement.
Additional Requirements for International Applicants
Foreign nationals must meet the following additional requirements:
- All international applicants must take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). To find the nearest test site, contact the LSAC at www.lsac.org, lsacinfo@lsac.org or 215-968-1001.
- An international applicant must hold a degree that is equivalent to the American undergraduate bachelor’s degree. International applicants should contact the LSAC for additional information regarding degree evaluation services.
- An international applicant whose native language is not English must either take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. For the TOEFL, a minimum score of 600 (paper based) or 100 (Internet based) is required. For the IELTS, a minimum score of 7.5 is required. We will also accept the Pearson Test for English (PTE), http://www.pearsonpte.com and have set 6.0 as the minimum acceptable score. Official test results of the TOEFL, IELTS,or PTE should be sent directly to the LSAC CAS.

Applicants must be able to show they have sufficient resources to fund educational and living expenses for the three-year J.D. program and provide the following:
- A completed Statement of Financial Responsibility form, which can be found at www.willamette.edu/wucl/admission/information/international.htm
- Official bank verification of funds (written in English), showing that you and/or your sponsor have sufficient resources to cover your educational and living expenses for the three-year J.D. program. Applicants who submit bank documents showing only one year of funding must attest that adequate funding is available from the same or an equally dependable source for the second and third years of the program.
- A photocopy of the name/photo page of your passport showing your image and the correct spelling of your name.
All appropriate documentation must be sent by admitted students and received and approved by the College of Law before the school will send them an I-20 (Application for Student Visa).
