Carrel Etiquette

POLICY

All law students who wish to have an assigned carrel must have an enrolled law student carrel partner, both of whom confirm the arrangement with the library.

Carrel assignments will be by lottery and are valid until May 31 of the following year unless relinquished or revoked for failure to comply with the terms of the permit.

LOTTERY PROCEDURE

        1.  Application:  Beginning Monday, August 24, 2009, students may designate on the carrel email form provided on the library homepage the name of their law student carrel partner and their first 4 carrel preferences.  Consult the carrel floor plan Partners must be designated. If you do not specify a partner, one will be assigned to you at the completion of the lottery drawing on Friday. See Suggestions below

        2.   Accommodating Disabilities:  Special requests will be addressed for specific disabilities requiring accommodation on a case-by-case basis.  Submit requests to the Library Director no later than 5:00 p.m. Monday, August 24, 2009.

        3.  Drawing:

             a.  Completed lottery forms will be emailed to lottery administrator. (Note: If a 3L chooses to share with a 2L or 1L, both names will go in the 3L lottery drawing. Likewise, if a 2L chooses to share with a 1L, both names go in the 2L drawing.)

             b. Lottery forms will be drawn according to the schedule below.  If none of the indicated choices are available, a carrel will be assigned as close as possible to the choices.

                     *  3L lottery drawing begins Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. and will continue until 4:00 p.m.  After that time, any subsequent 3L requests will be placed in the 2L lottery drawing.

                     *  2L lottery drawing begins Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. and will continue until 4:00 p.m.  After that time, any subsequent 2L or 3L requests will be placed in the 1L lottery drawing.

                     *  1L lottery drawing begins Thursday, August 27, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. and will continue until 4:00 p.m.

                     *  On Friday morning, August 28, 2009 any remaining 1L students will be assigned a carrel to share. 2L's and 3L's are responsible for obtaining a carrel through the lottery; none will be randomly assigned.

             c.  Carrel availability will be posted on this website as the lottery drawings progress.

             d.  Carrel permits should be picked up at the Circulation Desk and must be posted on the assigned carrel.

       4. Suggestions:

                     *  2L students - don't put your name in the drawing until after 4:00 on Tuessday, August 25. Then check the lottery availability page to make sure the carrel you want is still available. That way you don't waste your selection.

                     *  1L students - Don't decide not to apply for a carrel - you will want one eventually. You will want somewhere to spread out your books, use your laptop, etc. It is highly suggested you wait until after 4:00 on Wednesday, August 26 to complete your lottery form and check the availability page first. That way you don't waste your selection on a spot already taken.

  CARREL ETIQUETTE

* If your partner is using the carrel, use another available library seat.

* Assigned carrels may be used by anyone, but must be vacated upon arrival of the assignee.

* The area surrounding the carrel is not to be used for storage.

* Leave the writing surface reasonably clear of books, etc., when you are not using the carrel, so that others may use the carrel for temporary purposes.

* Vested property rights do not attach to carrels.  They are a shared resource just as is the collection, computer access, etc.

* Carrel civility is a necessary virtue for peaceful coexistence with your peers.  Remember, some of them will become judges.
