1. Find your regulation in the Code of Federal
Regulations (CFR) Index volume at the end of the set.
Note the year of the volume.
2. Check the latest monthly pamphlet of the
CFR entitled “LSA: List of CFR Sections Affected,” which
cumulates all changes back to the last published revision of
the CFR title in question (inclusive dates for each title are
indicated on the inside cover and should relate back to the
year of your volume in step 1. If it does not, see the
librarian). This pamphlet is located at the end of the
CFR set.
3. Beginning with the month following that
for which the pamphlet found in step 2 was published, check
the Federal Register (FR) Monthly Indexes, “Cumulative (for
each month) List of CFR Parts Affected” (last issue for the
month. List is in the back of each index).
4. Check the Cumulative List of CFR Parts
Affected in the Daily Issue of the Federal Register for the
most recent day in the current month.
5. For example, on December 20, 2008 assume
you wish to update 45 CFR 612.8. On that date you would
do as follows:
(a) 45 CFR 612.8 is found in volume 45 of the CFR revised
as of October 1, 2007.
(b) On the inside cover of the September, 2008 List
of CFR Sections Affected pamphlet (most recent that we have
received as of 12/20/08) it indicates that titles 42-50 cover
changes from October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008.
(c) Check the Federal Register CFR Parts Affected for
the latest issue that we have received for the months of October
and November located in the back of the issue.
(d) Check the December 20, 2008 issue of the daily
Federal Register (or the most current issue).
6. You may also find current Federal Regulations
using Westlaw, Lexis or the U.S. Government Website at http://www.gpoaccess.gov/cfr/index.html.
7. Do not forget that for many subject areas,
there are looseleaf services that bring together Federal Regulations
along with statutes, court decisions and commentary.
** Remember, you can Shepardize the CFR, Presidential
Proclamations, Executive Orders and Reorganization Plans online
in Lexis and through Keycite in Westlaw.
