Marine Policy Expert to Kick Off Speaker Series
Willamette University College of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Juan Luis Suarez de Vivero of the University of Seville will present the first lecture in the law school’s 13th Annual Speaker Series. “Marine Policy: Europe and Beyond,” will highlight critical issues that European policymakers have faced in developing comprehensive policies on marine resources and coastal zone management. In particular, Suarez de Vivero will draw upon his extensive background in marine geography and geopolitics to discuss the implications throughout the world of the current crises in fish stocks. The lecture will emphasize fisheries governance and alternative management systems for marine ecology.
Suarez de Vivero’s lecture will be held Tuesday, September 18, 2007, at 4 p.m. in Room 217 of the Truman Wesley Collins Legal Center, which houses the College of Law. The center is located at 245 Winter St. SE in Salem. A reception will immediately follow the lecture. This event is free and open to the public.
Suarez de Vivero Biography
Juan Luis Suarez de Vivero is professor of geography and head of the Department of Human Geography at the University of Seville in Spain. He specializes in marine geography and the geopolitics of the ocean. He is the European coordinator of the Consortium for Transatlantic Cooperation in Marine Policy and Coastal Management Education, as well as a member of the International Geographical Union Commission on Marine Geography. In addition, he has been a consultant on coastal and maritime activities, coastal management, maritime transport, and fisheries organizations for the Inter-American Development Bank, the European Commission and the regional government of Andalucia. Suarez de Vivero has published extensively, including articles in Marine Policy, Ocean & Coastal Management, Coastal Management, and Sociologia Ruralis. His many books and contributions to books have been published by Blackwell Science, Ashgate, Kluwer, Amsterdam University Press and Ediciones del Sebal.
