Endorsements Overview
An endorsement is the subject matter (content area) or specialty field in which an individual is licensed to teach. Early childhood, elementary, and middle level all earn a multiple subjects endorsement. Middle level may also earn a specific middle level endorsement in language arts, science, social studies or basic math. High school teachers may teach only in the endorsement area specified on the license.
The School of Education offers endorsements in 26 content areas. In the MAT programs these endorsements include the specialty areas of art, music, physical education, reading and English for speakers of other languages. (View the full list of endorsements offered.) Through the Center for Excellence in Teaching, three endorsements are offered for in-service teachers: ESOL, Reading and Special Education.
