Pre-Student Teaching Resources and FormsMaster of Arts in Teaching

The primary purpose of the pre-student teaching field experience is to get a broad understanding of schools, students, and the culture and context for schooling. Students follow the Observation Guidelines [pdf] as they move from observing to participating in the classrooms.

In the MAT Full-Time program students attend their primary level of authorization, student teaching placement in the fall semester for two or more full days per week until the beginning of the practicum in mid-October. At that point, students typically go to their second authorization level of interest until early December, when they return to their student teaching placement for the rest of the year.

In the Part-Time MAT Aspire program students do their pre-student teaching during the entire first year of the program. As Aspire students are typically juggling work or other responsibilities, they work out a schedule with their supervising teacher that is agreeable to both. Aspire students need to complete a minimum of 90 hours for the pre-student teaching requirement. This requirement may be fully or partly waived based upon significant, appropriate previous experience in schools. Responsibilities during this field experience are to experience the full range of experiences of schooling, including parent conferences, co-curricular activities, school board and parent club meetings, and examination of the school context and culture as well as observation of teaching.
