MY OTHER INTERESTS

TV Shows

Ok, I confess.  I watch too much tv.  My only justification is it helps me unwind.  So, here are a few of my favorite shows:

Eureka:  This show about a town of nerdy scientists just feels full of people I know.  Very well done and a lot of fun.  Plus, who wouldn’t want a house that fulfills your every need?

Psych:  Who would have thought a show about a fake pschic would be so funny?  Be sure to go to the website.  The psych-outs moments are hilarious.

Stargate SG-1:  Ok, so far this season has been less than impressive and I am so over the whole Merlin storyline.  Still, the show can be a lot of fun, so I am willing to try.  I am new to Stargate Atlantis, and the older seasons seem better.

Battlestar Galactica:  Possibly the best show on television.  Ignore the fact that it is on the sci-fi channel—this show deals with more issues relevant to current events than the news.

Television Without Pity:  For the most entertaining episode summaries and message boards regarding television shows go to TWP.  Even if you have seen the episode they are fun to read.

Movies

I end up reading more about movies than seeing them, because some of the movies I want to see never make it to Salem and once the semester starts.

Rotten Tomatoes:  The best place to get to get a general feel for how a movie is reviewed.  The site takes many reviews and creates a score, with a separate score for more reputable reviewers.

New York Times:  I find out about most movies through the Friday and Sunday issues of the Times.  The primary reviewer is now A.O. Scott, who I rarely agree with.  He is a huge Spielberg fan, who is one of my least favorite directors (sorry guys).  Manohla Dargis’ reviews are always interesting, and Stephen Holden is always intelligent.

Seeing Black.com:  This site provides an (not the) African-American perspective on movies that have a political or racial aspect to them, including reviews of movies you might not find elsewhere.  The reviewer has caused me to think differently about several films.  The site also has other sections on literature, other arts, and news affecting the black community.
