Final Presentation Guidelines

You will each give a 10 minute individual presentation on Nov. 30, Dec. 2, and Dec. 7.. You will need to have "visual aids" -- posters or a PowerPoint presentation, for example. Practice presentations are Nov. 23; be ready!

Some choices of presentation style are: (do not use a presentation or paper from another class)

A traditional presentation.: Choose a topic, research it, and present it. You may choose one culture (any culture) or compare cultures. You may also research personal, not cultural, values.
Conduct a survey of at least 20 people and five questions on a "values" topic. Compile and present the results.
Invite and coordinate a panel on your topic. You must give the panel questions to address, as well as coordinate how the class will interact with the panel.
Make a video about a personal or cultural values.
Choose a movie or song and explore behaviors, values, and beliefs in the song or movie.

Scope

Behaviors, values and beliefs: Whatever your topic is, you must discuss personal and/or cultural behaviors, values and beliefs.
Your topic should not be too broad or too narrow, and you must learn something new about the topic as you do research and prepare.
Your topic should be interesting to you, interesting to the rest of the class, and interesting to me.
Your must demonstrate what you have learned in this class.

Evaluation: You will be graded on effort, content (accurate, clear, interesting, relevant), organization, visual aids, presentation skills, and English (grammar, pronunciation, fluency).

Topic

Each student will have a different topic. I must approve your topic.

On the back are some examples of topics. You may choose one of these or another topic not on the list.

Pets
Gift giving: mainstream U.S. versus Japan (for what occasions are gifts given and why? What are the values and beliefs behind gift giving?)
Honesty in academia
Neighbors
Fashion on campus
Shame (haji?)
The ideal boyfriend or girlfriend
Volunteering
Values in elementary schools (or high schools .. etc.)
Friendship on college campuses
Leadership on campus
Important holidays
Political parties
Treatment of the elderly
Values in Oregon: east and west, rural and urban
Travel and vacations
Work schedules
Tipping
Material wealth
Name and titles (-san, -sama, -sensei, Mr. Miss, Mrs., Ms., Dr. Professor etc.)
Important age celebrations
Christianity
Judaism
Islam

Remember that whatever you choose, you must discuss behaviors, values and beliefs!
