Stereotypes: Preparation for the linked class with Willamette students on October 21
Definition
stereotype/stereotyping (n)/ stereotype (v): an overly-simple and often wrong idea about a group of people
It's natural
Stereotyping can be harmful and discriminatory; it is a kind of prejudice. It is also natural and useful for survival in society. Without making some judgments about people and groups, it is impossible to survive in society. We can choose friends, avoid certain people, and conduct business, in part, because we make assumptions about individuals and groups.
What were your stereotypes of Americans before you came to Oregon?
How did you develop these stereotypes? Be specific. American teachers or friends in Japan? Television? Movies? Your parents comments? Music? Or? (Which movies or television shows?)
Were the stereotypes you had of Americans generally true in your experience in the U.S. so far? Explain!
