James B. Thompson

The following video on my dual roles as an artist and educator was commissioned by the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in conjunction with my recent mid-career touring exhibition to document how my conceptual practice manifests itself in the form of a series of multimedia artworks for each body of work that I create for exhibition. The video outlines my background and education in art in terms of the influence of mentors in shaping my perception of art as an investigative tool to explore one's culture. The video also highlights my artistic practice in the painting and printmaking studios to reveal the process of how a series of artworks come together to form an exhibition. Critics weigh in on my exploration of materiality and former students (now established artists and educators) describe my teaching and thought process in the studio as an artist/educator. The video captures the creative period between the two major museum touring exhibitions, James B. Thompson: The Vanishing Landscape and Linear Metaphysics: Contemporary Mark-Making and Time-Based Art Works. The artworks are shown "in-progress" being created as well as having a portion of them documented in their final, completed form as framed works upon the wall of an exhibition space as a body of works. The video also documents the importance of place as a conceptual component of these bodies of work as I explored the state of Oregon and the Orkney Archipelago of Scotland for two separate bodies of work that became touring exhibitions.
