Connecting Your Willamette Email Address to GMail via POP3

Quick Explaination

If you know what you're doing, and just need to setup POP3/SMTP access, go here to activate POP3 for your WU mail account and then you can connect it to your GMail account. Since you also want to send emails via GMail as your WU email address, you need to use the SMTP option or you will not be able to email many campus mailgroups - set SMTP server to 'smtp.willamette.edu' on port '465' and provide your username and password.

In Depth Instructions

If you use GMail and don't like having to check it and your Willamette mail account, you may have set up mail forwarding so that all the emails go to GMail. But you can actually do one better than that! GMail allows you to load any email account into GMail so that it works nativly, to receive and send.

The only catch is, GMail only works with the POP3 protocol, and Willamette uses the more powerful, but more difficult to sync with, IMAP protocol. However you can activate POP3 on your Willamette account simply by visiting this page and turning it on.

Once you've done that, go to your GMail settings, go to the Accounts tab, under 'Get mail from other accounts:' click 'Add another mail account' and follow the directions there. The POP3 server is 'mail.willamette.edu' and your username and password are your Willamette login info. I also created a label called 'Willamette' so I could easily tell where my email's are coming from, but that's optional. You will next be promted to configure GMail to send email as your WU account too, enter the name you'd like to display when emails are sent, then select 'Send through willamette.edu SMTP servers'. Set the SMTP Server to 'smtp.willamette.edu', the port to '465', and enter your login information again.

And that's about it, now when you go to send an email, you can chose to send it from your GMail or WUMail account, and all your Willamette emails will come into GMail!
