Excursions in Modern Mathematics - Tannenbaum and Arnold
Course Description:
Rather that just rehashing the algebra and geometry that is usually covered in high school, this course gives an overview of several other areas of mathematics whose relevance to everyday life is (hopefully) more plausible. We hope that this will give you a broader appreciation of what math is and what it can do.
Homework, Tests, and All That:
There will be a quiz every Tuesday on which there is not a midterm. This is to provide both you and me with continual feedback on how the class is going.

No homework will be collected. I will assign suggested problems which you should go over carefully. Some of the quiz problems will be closely related the suggested homework problems. In addition, we will often spend class time working in small groups, the results of this group work will be collected and graded.

There will be three midterm tests on the following dates: September 19, October 17, and November 14. Each test will cover approximately one part of the book (we probably won't have time to cover everything). There will also be an extra large quiz on the last week of class (December 5) to give you an extra chance for feedback on part 4.

There will be cumulative final exam at the end of the semester. It will be at the officially scheduled final time.

You can make up a test ONLY if you have a compelling and well documented reason for missing it. You can make up a quiz only if you tell me ahead of time that you are going to miss it.

The above factors will count towards your final grade as follows:

Final: 20%
Midterms: 12% each
Big quiz 6%
Quizzes: 18%
Class Participation/Worksheets: 20%
