How to Submit Homework Electronically
Each of my students has their own personal space on the network where
they can turn in homework and find some class materials. This space
is on the computer called fermat . In your space on this
computer you will find these folders:
- classnotes:
-
Contains most of the things that I do on the computer in class, often with
additional comments written in. It may contain other material. In
general it is a place where I can put class materials and you can
retrieve them.
- submit:
-
This is where you save your homework when you want to turn it in. You
can either save it in here when you start working on the homework, or
you can drag-and-drop homework saved elsewhere into this folder to turn
it in.
I have a program which will move homework from your submit folder
to a directory on my computer.
- return:
-
I will grade your homework and add comments and corrections to the
file. When I have finished grading your homework, I will put it into
your return folder.
- questions:
-
If you are working in the mab and have trouble with Maple, you can
save a copy of your worksheet into this folder and send me an
email with a question. I will be able to look at your worksheet
on my computer and send you back an email telling you what you are
doing wrong.
To get this all to work, you have to connect your
computer to the fermat computer. You can do this from any
computer on campus, though it may not be useful to you if you don't
have maple on your computer.
Here is how you connect a computer:
For Windows Users
- Right click on Network Neighborhoods (called my network
places on wondows 2000). You should find this icon near the top
left corner of the desktop.
- Choose map network drive from the menu that appears
- A dialog box will appear, choose a drive letter (E: is usually
fine.) and type "\\fermat\your user id in the path field.
(don't type your user id literally, put your willamette
computer id in that space.
- If you are in a lab un-check the "reconnect on login" box. If
you are doing this from home, you can check this box and then your
computer will always be hooked up to fermat.
- Click OK, and there you are.
- If it asks for a password enter your Willamette email password.
This is the same as the process for connecting a computer in a dorm
to the H: drive. Look at this
sight for info about how to do that.
Once you have done this you will find drive called something like
"E:yourname on Fermat" in My computer. You can use
it just like the C or H drives.
Support for Mac users...
...should be possible. If I get any demand for it I will make it
work.
For Linux Users
If you have the appropriate smb client software installed, you can
mount your fermat share as a smbfs file system, and then it behaves
just like any other directory on your system (it sometimes does
strange things with permissions). Read the smbmount man page for
information. Use your hudson account name and password for
connecting.
