Text: Excursions in Modern Mathematics, 7th edition,  by Tannenbaum; Prentice-Hall. ISBN 9780321568038

Calculator: You need to have a calculator that can raise any number to any power (either a key labeled y x or ^). You should be able to find a suitable calculator for $10-$20, if you don't have one already.
Grading:
Approx 25 worksheets at 5 points each: 125 points
Four 20-minutes quizzes at 20 points each: 80 points
Four one-hour exams at 75 points each: 300 points
One or two written assignments at 30 points each:
30-60 points
Comprehensive Final exam: 150 points
Total: 685-715 points
For each graded piece of work, I will post cutoff scores for grades of A-, B-, C, C-, and D. At the end of the term, if your point total is more than the total of the A- cutoffs, your grade will be an A- or better, and so on. Cutoffs will never be higher than this:

A- B- C C- D
90% 80% 70% 67% 60%
... but they are often lower.
Exam makeup policy: Exam and quizzes are given early or late only for verifiable illness or for university-sanctioned intercollegiate activities. For collegiate activities, you must see me before you leave to arrange a makeup time. In any case, contact me in advance except in emergencies.

Final exam time is Friday, Dec. 18th from 8:00 - 11:00 a.m., as set by the University; early finals will not be given. Really.  I mean it.  Please make travel plans accordingly.  If someone else will be making your travel plans, it would be wise to notify them immediately of your committments.

Homework:  Homework is assigned daily but not collected. Skipping or putting off homework will damage your grade badly. Please don't let this happen to you. Homework assignments.

Worksheet details:  Worksheets are done in class, and can be considered a classroom participation component of your grade.  In particular, you must be present to do the worksheet.  To allow for unexpected difficulties in students' lives, I will drop the three lowest worksheet scores (which may be missed worksheets).  Students can use this flexibility so that an overslept morning, an appointment, a "personal day", a day of unpreparedness, or other event will not damage their grade.  Please be aware, though, that it is the students' choice to use these days or save them for unexpected difficulties later in the term; once they are used up, they are used up.

More on attendance:  When students arrive late to class, it distracts the instructor and other students and is generally disruptive.  Please arrive before class begins.  I will not penalize the first two late arrivals, but for the third and subsequent late arrival, I will not be giving credit for the day's worksheet.

Academic Honesty Expectations

All exams and quizzes are to be taken with books and notes closed (except as noted on the exam paper), completely on your own. Anything you can electronically store on your calculator is acceptable at all times, but written notes are prohibited unless express exception is made in writing on the exam paper.
In keeping with college policy, plagiarism will be reported to the dean (see student handbook). Systematic or organized plagiarism on exams will result in course failure.

If you are uncertain about some aspect of this policy, it is your responsibility to get clarification from the instructor.
