Public Transportation and Willamette University

It's Free!  Well, that's not quite true, but it's already paid for.  Willamette has made arrangements with the Salem Area Transit District - your Willamette University I.D. card is all you need to ride the city buses - just show it to the driver.

When? Salem buses, or Cherriots, run from about 6:15 a.m. to 9:35 p.m. on weekdays, 7:45 a.m. to 9:35 p.m. on Saturdays and Holidays.  No service on Sundays. Cherriots has extensive web pages with: schedules and individual route maps and a system map.  Buses run either every half-hour or hour depending on the route, day, and time-of-day.

Where? The best place to catch the bus is at the Courthouse Square transit station, three blocks west of campus in the block surrounded by High street, Church street, Court and Chemeketa streets.  It's about an eight-minute walk at a moderate pace from Collins Hall - five minutes if you walk fast. Here's a map showing the walk, with the transit station marked with a red star.  Where does it go?  All over Salem. Here's the system map or individual route maps.

But it's a long walk from the stop to my destination. Two thoughts there:
First, walks of about a mile are pretty quick and fairly painless - and taking such a walk twice a day can do wonders for your health and weight.  Americans are the most sedentary people on the face of the earth - go to any other country and it's apparent.  Does the rest of the world know something we don't?
Second, all Salem buses have bike-racks on the front bumper.  You can put your bike on the bus, then ride quickly from the stop to your destination.  With the recent completion of the new transit mall (in October 2000) we can now put our bikes on right at the transit station.  There's no special pass or fee required.

More Information: Cherriots web page is full of everthing you might want to know. Remember, Willamette folks ride free with their I.D. card.
