I've commuted by bicycle to Willamette for 20 years, year-round, in all
weather. Overall, I have been a year-round bicycle commuter for 27
years, living in Oregon, Colorado, and California. I have commuted
one-way distances of one to ten miles daily, in heat, rain, and snow.
The snow part's not for everybody, but if I can do that, surely the average
person can ride in tamer weather. Look for my cyclo-commuter tips in these
pages.

I use the Salem bus system from time to time, too.

Yes, my wife and I do own a car, but most of the time it's my "wife's
car." We used to have a second car, used mostly on weekends, but not
much
even then. You can save great amounts in auto insurance by either
having
only one car, or by getting a low-mileage discount on one (I sure
did).
Ask your insurance agent about the premium reduction you could get if
your
car(s) are used for less than 6000 miles per year.

No, I don't have a Willamette University Parking permit, and I haven't
for years. On rare occasions this is inconvenient, but it has never been
a problem. I suspect I could easily pay taxi fare in emergencies out of
the money I'm saving as noted above.
