Subjective objects are objects which really aren't there: they exist because they are defined by surrounding features. Here a subjective object is also two words. Cast "shadows" help define the shape of non-existent letters which make up the word. The familiarity of English letter forms also helps us to define the word. We only need to see parts of letters to construct the whole word in our minds eye.
