日本語132 第七課 文法(Grammar) III. は of contrast; joining two clauses with が meaning BUT

A. は for contrast よく コーヒーを のみます。でも、ジュースは あまり のみません。

 Xが好きです。でも、Yは あまり 好きじゃないです。

Since expressing something in the NEGATIVE implicitly CONTRASTS with other things that one does or likes, etc., we often find は occurring with negative expressions. e.g.,

ミルクは のみません tends to mean that "As for milk, you don't drink it," but (implied) you drink lots of other fluids...

今日 ぎんこうには いきません suggests that "Today you won't go to the Bank" but (implied) you might be going to several other places

This might set something up that I used to like to call the Water or "Wa Wa" pattern, i.e., that is, 2 WA's in parallel, contrastive construction:

ピザ 好きです。でも、サラダ あまり 好きじゃないです。

So we can have several は's in a sentence. For example you could say 今日 ぎんこうに いきません = "As for today, I won't be going to the bank"

The sentence above leads to another point: double particles as in the に は; は can replace を and が; but will be added to other particles like に、へ、で

よくガウデへ いきます。でも、Cat Cavern へは あまり いきません

あしたは きません。でも、あさっては きますよ

B. Connecting two clauses using が = BUT -- So most of those two sentence patterns above can be combined into a single sentence with 2 clauses:

ピザ 好きですが、サラダ あまり好きじゃないです。

コーラは のみますが、コーヒーは のみません。

今日は きませんが、あしたは きます。

バスケットを みるのは 好きですが、するのは あまり 好きじゃないです。

あさは ごはんを たべませんでしたが、ひるは たべました。

えいがは みませんでしたが、テレビは みました。

ぎんこうには いきませんでしたが、ゆうびんきょくには いきました。

としょかんでは あまり べんきょうしませんが、へやでは、よくします。

I like to GO to parties but I don't like to GIVE (します) parties.
