Robert Mankoff of The New Yorker proposes a taxonomy for cartoons. "Most gags consist of an unreal image with a rather ordinary caption," he says, citing (1), above left. But there are also ordinary image and unreal caption (2); unreal image and unreal caption (3); and ordinary image and ordinary caption (4).
