These matsutake (Japanese pine mushrooms) were collected near Mt. Jefferson a few years before matsutake hunters started to shoot each other in order to protect their secret hunting grounds. Matsutake mushrooms were exported to Japan where they were highly prized and priced at several hundred dollars per pound.
