Graduate School of Education earns teacher accreditation
Willamette University's Graduate School of Education has earned initial accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), a body that sets rigorous professional standards for educating teachers.
NCATE accreditation focuses on the ability of teacher candidates to meet the educational needs of diverse school populations. Programs must be able to demonstrate candidates' competency in both subject matter knowledge and teaching skills in a variety of ways.
"The NCATE accreditation reflects the high performance-based standards for teacher education at Willamette," said Rita Moore, interim dean of the Graduate School of Education. "Our graduates earn numerous hours of field experience during the program, preparing them to teach effectively from day one."
Master's candidates complete more than 900 hours of fieldwork with mentor teachers prior to graduation, and the school partners with 140 districts and schools to create the best possible field experiences for each candidate.
At Willamette, small classes allow students and faculty to work closely together. The university campus also provides candidates with unique educational opportunities. Candidates recently worked with Willamette Academy, a college access program for historically under-represented students, to develop effective strategies for teaching students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.
"Willamette's Graduate School of Education joins a select group of high-quality teacher preparation programs that focus on teaching excellence," said Larry D. Large, interim president. "We are exceptionally pleased and proud to have earned this national recognition and accreditation."
