As evidenced by this week's snowfall, the icy grip of winter still has a hold on us, but spirits among WU alumni and students couldn't be higher after Bearcats place kicker Conner Mertens inspired the community recently with his courage and pride. Unsurprisingly, his groundbreaking story made national headlines. Read more about Mertens and the WU community's supportive embrace of one of its own here.
Guinness Book Makes Willamette World Record Official
Bearcats everywhere (but especially on campus) had another reason to be proud of their university last month, as the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed that the horde of more than 1,060 students, faculty and staff members that stormed The Quad last August for the world's largest game of Red Light/Green Light did indeed break the official world record. New Issue of The Scene
The winter 2014 edition is out now. Cozy up with your own copy, or check it out online.
If you missed out on the excitement of Red Light/Green Light, don't worry, because there are plenty of grand-scale events on the horizon, including Alumni Weekend (Sept. 12-14). Planning for the annual extravaganza is still underway, but Bearcats from all generations will undoubtedly have a blast participating in games and catching up with one another. Event programming will be aimed at all WU alumni, but alumni from nine classes (1964, '69, '74, '79, '84, '89, '94, '04, '09) will get to participate in specially-designed activities to celebrate their reunions.
Looking for a way to connect with other WU alumni sooner than September? If so, save the date for each of the three Career Network Lunch & Learn Series workshops led by Alumni Association board member and certified career coach Peter Wallmark '68 this spring (Mar. 20, Apr. 17, May. 15). Each of these gatherings will present fantastic opportunities to further your career and meet other interesting and experienced WU alumni.
Check out our events page for more info on upcoming events, including the next Atkinson Lecture Series event (Mar. 11, 7:30 pm), which will feature acclaimed author and humorist Sherman Alexie. There will also be a pre-lecture reception starting at 6:00 for those who arrive early. Tickets for the lecture will be available on Feb. 17. Check the events page later in the month for additional details.
Unfortunately, the world's most famous and amazingly omnipotent groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow this past Goundhog's Day, which means we are in for six more weeks of winter (if you believe in that sort of thing). So, it's a good thing we have a busy February to look forward to as we brave another chilly month.
