Summer Explorations

Enrichment classes for children entering grades 5-8. Students spend 15 hours - 5 days, 3 hours each day - with other curious, creative and intelligent students in small classes usually a 10:1 student: teacher ratio.  Classes are taught by enthusiastic undergraduates and community members.

Summer 2015 Courses:

Math Circle - join the club! – Explore mathematical games, solve puzzles and apply mathematical principles to everyday activities.  This is a class for the young person who loves mathematical riddles and puns!  As one participant explained:  'Math Circles is like a board game, there is no right answer, each decision changes the problem.' Computer Game Design – Design animated, third-person view video games. Learn computer programming using Scratch software. Create, share, and take home your own game! THIS CLASS IS FULL.  Please call 503-370-6513 to add your name to the wait list

Advanced Computer Game Design - Use GameMaker software to take video game making to the next level.  Introduces simple code writing. Prerequisite:  Computer Game Design.

Creative Writing – Do you love to write? Learn interesting prompts and new techniques to develop your best ideas into stories. Bring your writing to life.

Beginning Robotics – Design, build and program a robot to race, 'sumo' wrestle, joust, or play songs you compose.  Learn and use the Lego Mindstorms robots. Develop your computer programming skills. THIS CLASS IS FULL.  Please call 503-370-6513 to add your name to the wait list

Advanced Robotics – Engineer robots for specific environmental conditions.  Program more complex robotic movements. Design, build, program, test and revise your solutions. Use teamwork to conquer engineering challenges.  Beginning Robotics and understanding the use of the sensors and the basic NXT programming is the prerequisite for Advanced Robotics.  Contact Christine if you have questions. Underwater Robotics – Explore advanced engineering and programming concepts while learning to build and program a remotely operated underwater vehicle.  Robots get wet; students do not. Underwater Robotics is offered Session 2 only and runs all day, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Successfully completing the programming and building challenges in Advanced Robotics is the prerequisite for Underwater Robotics.   Contact Christine if you have questions.

When are classes held?

This summer, we are offering two sessions:

Session 1:  June 22-26, 2015

  • Morning Classes: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Afternoon Classes:1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Session 2: August 3-7, 2015

  • Morning Classes: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Afternoon Classes: 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Each class is 5 days long and 3 hours each day.  Morning classes run 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. and afternoon classes run 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. each day. 

Lunch Breaks – Please note that students who are enrolled in both morning and afternoon classes should bring their own lunch. Supervision during the lunch break (from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.) will be provided.

Underwater Robotics is offered Session 2 only and runs all day, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Where are classes held?

Classes are held in Ford Hall, Walton, and Olin Science Center on the Willamette University Campus.


Early Registration – Register early and the price is $100* per class.

The deadline for Early Registration is:

  • Session 1:  May 15, 2015
  • Session 2: June 22, 2015

Regular Registration – On or after May 15 for session 1 and June 22 for session 2 the price is  $115* per class.

*Fee includes all supplies and materials.



Register now

Online registration is immediate and requires a credit card or debit card.  Upon successful registration, download, print, read, and complete the two-page liability release form, English or Spanish, and bring it to the first day of class or mail it, on or before June 12, 2015, to the address below.

Online registration deadlines:
Session 1 – June 14, 2015
Session 2 – July 26, 2015

 If you are unable to register online it means the class is full or the registration deadline has passed. To add your name to the waiting list, or check for last minute cancellations, please call Christine 503-370-6513.

Mail-in registration

Mail-in registration is subject to delays as registration occurs when the mail is received by Willamette University Youth Programs staff. Email or US mail confirmation will be sent.

To complete a mail-in registration,

  1. Download and print the registration form and the liability release form, English or Spanish.  
  2. Read, complete, and mail both the registration and the two-page liability release form with payment, your check made out to Willamette University, to

Scholarships are available when tuition revenue allows. The first-round scholarship deadline for Summer Explorations 2015 is May 15, 2015. A second round of scholarships will be awarded if additional tuition revenue exists.  Contact Christine Speak to receive an application.
