New TIUA Class Arrives
Tokyo International University of America (TIUA) welcomed 93 new students to Salem this week for a year of academic and cultural learning.
The students, who attend Tokyo International University (TIU) in Japan, will take English language and American studies courses for the next year at TIUA and Willamette University.
The TIUA campus was established in 1989 through a partnership between TIU and Willamette. Since that time, 2,182 students have enrolled in the Salem program.
The partnership also allows Willamette students and professors to study and teach in Japan at the TIU campus.
This year's class includes 59 women and 34 men. They will be greeted Tuesday at a ceremony by Willamette administrators and the student body president.
TIUA students room with Willamette students in residence halls across campus. Their roommates learn about Japanese culture while helping the students integrate into campus life.
Community service and cultural sharing activities are also part of the TIUA students' experience in Salem.
