Willamette brings poet laureate Billy Collins to Salem

Willamette University will host "An Evening with Billy Collins" Wednesday, Nov. 17, in Hudson Concert Hall within Rogers Music Center. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. reading and discussion. The free event is open to the public and will be followed by a book signing.

Among his many awards, Collins was the U.S. Poet Laureate from 2001-03 and New York State Poet from 2004-06. He has also earned fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, The New York Foundation for the Arts and the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Collins makes regular appearances on National Public Radio and is Distinguished Professor of English at Lehman College, City University of New York, where he has taught for the past 30 years.

The event is sponsored by the Willamette University English Department, the university's American Studies Program and the Willamette Florence Program, in memory of Adele Birnbaum and Bill Braden, professors of English.
