Intern Meredith Marshburn
Internship Story: Meet Meredith Marshburn '18
Last summer, Meredith Marshburn '18 externed with Judge Samuel Thumma of the Division One Court of Appeals in Phoenix, Arizona. She observed as judges and clerks held conferences for cases, attended a number of oral arguments and trials, and co-authored an article with Judge Thumma. The article discussed management practices of the courts, suggesting that, although the current trend is toward for-profit practices, the application of nonprofit management tactics to the courts is worthy of consideration due to their functional similarity with nonprofits.

“This experience was a wonderful opportunity to have an introduction to the field of law,” says Marshburn. “Because of Judge Thumma's variety of work experience (Thumma worked as a private practitioner before serving on the bench) and his multitude of contacts, I had many networking opportunities.” Not only did she receive direct insight into a field of interest, but Marshburn also bolstered her own professional network and honed her writing skills.

Marshburn’s externship will help her move towards a career in law and/or social justice. “The externship was truly incredible and I feel very lucky to have had this experience.”

This is where you come in.

Willamette students need more internship opportunities. Plus, your place of business would benefit from the energy, intellectual curiosity and heart these students would bring. No internships at your workplace? Create one. It’s easy. We’ll show you how.
