Willamette University community comes together to achieve record-breaking fundraising year

by University Communications,

Willamette University celebrated the most successful fundraising year in its history, highlighting a remarkable display of dedication and support for the 181-year-old institution. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023, Willamette raised more than $27 million in commitments, beating the previous record from 2007.

“We are grateful for the unwavering commitment from our alumni, donors, faculty, staff, and friends who helped Willamette achieve new heights in philanthropy,” said Willamette University President Steve Thorsett. “Thanks to the generosity of those who support our mission of preparing students to turn knowledge into action, Willamette can continue to do what we’re known for — educating leaders who will serve their communities and engage with the most challenging and complex problems of our time.”

A majority of donors contributed to Willamette’s Annual Fund, which provides funding for students, faculty, and programs across the university, sustaining the excellence that is the hallmark of a Willamette education. The Annual Fund allows the university to invest in its current highest priorities — from scholarships and programming to library and lab equipment. The $2.6 million raised for the Annual Fund is the equivalent of having an additional $57 million in the endowment.

With the help of philanthropic support, Willamette is pursuing a path toward opening access to higher education, a decision that recently received national attention. By raising a majority of funds for scholarships, Willamette is lowering the financial barrier that prevents students from accessing a transformative Willamette education. Philanthropic investments have expanded the number and amount of scholarship aid offered, allowing the university to continue to attract the best and brightest students and supporting a diverse and vibrant campus community.

Other examples of what gifts made possible in fiscal year 2023 include:

  • The creation of a new faculty award at the College of Law focused on excellence in faculty scholarship.
  • A $5M estate commitment for scholarships at the Atkinson Graduate School of Management.
  • Revitalization of the Martha Springer Botanical Garden.
  • The establishment of a Health Coach and Educator at the Pacific Northwest College of Art charged with helping students access and connect with health and wellbeing resources at the university and in the Portland area.
  • An estate gift of $1.8M in support of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art.

“The generosity of our community fuels our vision, and their continued belief in Willamette’s mission propels us forward. This unwavering support ensures a promising future for Willamette and for the generations of Willamette students yet to come,” said Shelby Radcliffe, Vice President for Advancement.
