Welcome!

On this web site you can find all the practical information you need to know before and after coming here and also a bit about what's going on in this town, Salem. Willamette University was founded in 1842. We have approximately 2,500 students attending at any given time. The University is located at the edge of down town of Salem at right across from the Oregon State Capitol. Willamette University offers a number of interesting areas of education like the Atkinson Graduate School of Management, the College of Law, the College of Liberal Arts, and the School of Education. See a precise overview of the majors offered at Willamette.

Before arriving at Willamette you should make sure that you have:

  • A valid passport
  • Valid visa papers
  • Make arrangements for getting to Salem from the airport (we can help you)
  • Call in and confirm the time of departure and arrival with the airline
  • Make sure that you have the phonenumber of the person who is picking you up at the airport, just in case your flight is delayed
  • Have quarters or whatever currency is used in that praticular country you are in at the time so you can call home whenever you have time between your flights
  • An umbrella or rain jacket
  • Photos from home with family and friends
  • An travel size alarm clock
  • An adaptor for your laptop if you bring it, or just make sure that it has a built in adaptor, the same thing goes for your hairdryer and other electric appliances.
  • An adaptor plug so that you can actually plug in the stuff you brought, since the plugs aren't the same as for example in Europe
  • Stuff that makes you feel at home in the room, like your own bedspread/sheets, pictures, and stuff to hang on the walls, of course nothing that takes up too much space

As an international student you will be arriving a couple of days before the rest of the student body, which will give you the opportunity to get to know campus before it gets really crowded. The Office of International Education will be having a two and a half day orientation meeting for you, to give you the opportunity to get to know campus, down town, a bit about the American culture, and all the practical things you need to know, like insurance, job possibilities, on and off campus, housing and meal plans, along with many other things. Take a look at our orientation schedule and see what we have planned for you.
