Health Insurance

Health care is very expensive in the United States, therefore, Willamette University international students and scholars and their dependents are required to have health and accident insurance for the duration of their academic program.

Willamette provides a very good student health insurance plan through Aetna that meets and exceeds the U.S. Affordable Care Act standards. This plan also meets and exceeds the requirements for health insurance for "J" visa students/scholars. The insurance premium for the semester is automatically added to your bill at the beginning of each semester. Payment is required at the time tuition and other charges are paid, after your arrival. All international students and their dependents are automatically enrolled and billed for this insurance. Cost and summary of coverage are available on the Student Insurance website.

Insurance Enrollment

Although you will be enrolled in the health insurance plan if you do nothing, it is helpful to us to know if you want to enroll in the Willamette Student Health Insurance.

GO TO the International Student Insurance webpage for the Enrollment/Waiver Request form.

To enroll, you will complete Option A. Return the form as soon as you can using the instructions on the form. Even if you do not complete this enrollment form, you will be enrolled in the plan. ENROLLMENT IS FOR THE 2014-2015 year (8/1/2014-7/31/2015).

Questions regarding the health insurance policy, cost, and what it covers can be directed to SaVanna Huskey at 503-370-6972 or bishop-insurance@willamette.edu.

Questions regarding the waiver process can be directed to Ramona in the Office of International Education.

Insurance Waiver Requirements

If you BRING HEALTH INSURANCE coverage with you, you may be able to waive out of the university's student health insurance. You have ONE opportunity at the beginning of each academic year to request a waiver.  If you are starting your enrollment at WU in the spring, you may request a waiver in spring, by the spring deadline. No one is automatically given a waiver nor is a waiver guaranteed.

GO TO the International Student Insurance webpage for the Enrollment/Waiver Request form.

To request a waiver, you will complete Option B. There is a deadline to complete a waiver request. The Enrollment/Waiver deadline for international students is DIFFERENT than that of domestic students. If your waiver request is not approved, you will be be responsible for the health insurance cost. Late waiver requests will not be considered.
